FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the purpose of Money Skills Washington?
Many kids graduate high school without basic smart money habits. Mismanaging money can lead to less happiness and less success in life. Money Skills was formed to provide kids with solid basic knowledge in savings, budgeting, and investing.
  • Who are the workshops for?
Our focus is on developing skills for middle school and high school students, roughly ages 12-18. We want participants to feel confident about money before they become legal adults at age 18.
  • What time commitment is required?
Each workshop lasts 90 minutes, with plenty of time for questions. The workshops are held in-peron only, in the Seattle and Puget Sound area.
  • How are the workshops constructed?
The teens learn from Workshop Leader Bryan Knutson, and from each other. The workshops are delivered in-person only. Class sizes is limited to 4-6 teens, giving each participant a true chance to engage and learn. Workshops are schedule around the Puget Sound area. New workshop sessions are announced frequently be email, so teens can find a time and location to fit their schedule. If you don't see a workshop within a reasonable distance, please fill in our contact form and request a workshop at a location nearby.
  • Are the workshops set up as lectures or as interactive sessions?
There is some lecture-style instruction. However, the reason for having small, in-person workshops is to foster an interactive discussion.
  • Are both sessions held at once?
Teens take only one workshop in a single day. The 90-minute workshop is intensive. Participants will take home a booklet that reviews the major points. We recommend waiting at least 3 days before taking one of our other workshops. This allows the teen to absorb the material and review the booklet.
  • How is scheduling done?
First, purchase the bundle of both workshops. (The workshops can also be purchased separately, at a higher price.) After checkout, you will receive a series of emails with the dates, times, and locations of upcoming workshop sessions. When you see a workshop that is convenient, log in and sign up. The value of the workshop will be deducted from your account. You will have up to 6 months to take the workshops after you purchase them. We recommend taking the Money Skills Basics workshop first, then go on to the Investing Basics workshop.
  • Do I have to take the workshops in a particular order?
We recommend taking the Money Skills Basics workshop first, then go on to the Investing Basics workshop. Some teens already have good money management skills, and they can purchase only the Investing Basics workshop.
  • Are there any strings attached to these classes?
We take pride in saying without hesitation that these workshops are truly conflict-free. We are not sponsored by any fund company or other financial provider. This is strictly an independent venture.
  • Will additional workshops be made available?
We plan on providing additional sessions in the future. For now, the emphasis is on building the participant base for these two core sessions. Participants will need to complete the core sessions first, but from there we will be excited to have our workshop graduates continue to grow their skills!
